WHAT IS AN ICE AXE? |
The ice axe is a self arresting device that mountain climbers use when hiking on steep terrain. A mountaineer's ice axe is most often used as a walking stick. Mountaineers ascend by gripping the T in their uphill hand, keeping the serrated pick to the rear. They shove it into the snow with every step they take. It acts as a anchor, pick, cane, and occasionally a device that could save your life.

"AFTER A THOUSAND TIMES
OF DIGGING IN YOUR ICE AXE YOUR HAND CAN DEVELOP A BRUISE." Jim Epperson

"ONCE YOU GET ON THE STEEP STUFF THE ICE AXE IS ALWAYS IN YOUR HAND. IT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FALLING TO YOUR DEATH AND HOLDING ON. SO IT WOULD BE NICE TO HOLD ON WITHOUT A LOT OF DISCOMFORT."

"WHEN IT'S REALLY COLD LIKE -20 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT, HOLDING ON THE COLD STEEL- EVEN WITH GLOVED HANDS- IS A CHALLENGE."
